Infection trains the host for microbiota-enhanced resistance to pathogens.
Taurine prompts gut microbes, particularly Deltaproteobacteria, to produce high levels of sulfide to prevent colonization by pathogens such as Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kpn) which trigger life-threatening infection in hospitalized patients.
On the other hand, over-the-counter bismuth subsalicylate inhibits sulfide production and therefore can severely lower patient resistance to Kpn, accordingly.
The discovery was based on bacteria found in farmed pig meat Yersinia pseudotuberculosis, a food-borne pathogen.
